Orvieto is perched on a plateau of tufaceous rock that was once an island in the sea that covered the Paglia valley below. The old town centre can be reached either by using the funicular lift after you have parked your car below or via the ingenious system of lifts and escalators that have been dug out of the cliffs at 'Campo della Fiera'. The Duomo of Orvieto is one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. Gothic style architecture in Italy developed substantial differences from its European equivalent, chiefly due to the different cultural heritage of the Italian peninsula and the particular historical moment, characterised by comuni and free city states, in which this form of architecture gained a foothold here.
