Maremma does not only mean region near the sea, but also the mixing of water and land, of sweet currents and the sea salt aroma which creates the famous palude - fragrance/aroma/scent. The region's history can be traced back to the Etruscans, a highly civilized people who already 3.000 years ago built large canals to dry out the swamps creating flourishing farmland that came to be known as the "bread basket of Etruria" thanks to its rich soil and bountiful harvests (wheat, vine, olives).
