The Casentino is very important for its natural park. Set up in 1993, the "National Park of the Casentino Forests, Mount falterona and Campigna" extends over the ridge of the Tuscan- Romagna Appenine. 12 Tuscan and Romagna communes have offered the most valuable part of their territories: 36.000 hectares of woods amongst the broadest and best- preserved in Italy. Thick woods of silver fir and beech set off the signs of the millenary presence of man: medieval houses and villages, mule tracks, hermitages and monasteries, industrious towns rich in art and hisoty. But in particular, the Park conserves a great variety of flora and fauna. Here- besides many ungulates- there are the wolf and the golden eagle. The heart of the park consists of the State Casentino forests, an ancient forestry complex, inside of which, furtehr protected, is the most precious gem: Sassofratino, an unspoilt nature reserve of European importance.
