Siena is built on three hills, on which its Y-shaped town-planning development depends, characterized by steep slants, narrow and tortuous roads and sudden vistas on verdant valleys. According to the legend Siena was founded by Romans, but it reached its moment of great splendour during the Middle Ages, as the monuments and the artistic heritage prove especially with the masters of the Sienese Gothic style.The town is divided into "contrade" or wards (17 of the original 59 still exist), which run the Palio horserace, one of the most ancient and famous folk festival in Italy. The decline of the town begins in the 16C, when the Florentines took it. The visit of the town includes at least Piazza del Campo with Palazzo Pubblico and Piazza del Duomo with Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala. Whoever has more time can go on visiting the terzi (districts) di Città, di San Martino and di Camollia.
