Situated in Lombardy, northwest Italy, Milan was originally founded in the seventh century BC by Celts and since then has been rebuilt three times following conquests by foreign invaders. The last of these occasions was at the end of the Second World War when over a quarter of the city was flattened by the Allies. Today Milan is the second largest city in Italy after Rome.
