The easternmost of the northern Italian lakes, Lake Garda is also the largest, 52km (32 miles) long and 19km (12 miles) at its widest. Sheltered by mountains, its scenery, especially the part on the western shore that reaches from Limone to Salo, seems almost Mediterranean; you'll see olive, orange, and lemon trees, and even palms. The almost-transparent lake is ringed with four art cities: Trent to the northeast, Brescia to the west, Mantua to the south, and Verona to the east. The lake's eastern side is more rugged and less developed, but the resort-studded western strip is probably best for first-timers. On the western side, a circuitous road skirts the lake through one molelike tunnel after another. You can park your car at several secluded belvederes and take in the panoramic lakeside views. In spring, the scenery is splashed with color as everything from wild poppies to oleander bursts into bloom.
