The name 'Desenzano del Garda' derives from 'Decentianum' which was the term used to describe the farm, country estate and country residence of the wealthy Roman Decentius. He was the first of a long line of owners which also the towns of Verona and Brescia, the Confalonieri family and the Venetians. Mantova kept out the French until Louis XII and from 1512 to 1516 Desenzano was plundered by German troops. The Old Port were see today was rebuilt around 1454 and the town became a commercial hub. The Venetian style bridge which crosses the entrance was built in the 1930's togehter with the large wet dock. Unfortuantely the steamboats have all but disappeared.
