The lake Garda, Italy's largest and most popular lake (D.H.Lawrence called it the most beautiful place on earth), is one of the best spots in Europe for windsurfing and sailing due to favourable winds from the Alps. It is famous for its bustling Riviera Bresciana of olives groves, vines and citrus orchards and where Italy's fascist leader Benito Mussolini spent his last days. Mussolini and his ministers set up their headquarters here in 1943 in the lakeside town of Salo and "Il Duce" lived in Villa Feltrinelli, in nearby Gargnano, until his escape and execution in 1945. After decades of neglect, in 1997 the villa was sold to an American hotelier, Bob Burns, who converted it into a luxury hotel.
