At the beginning, the Lake of Como was a glacier. That time was the last ice age. As the glacier melted, it filled the basin beneath the Grigna Mountains with crystal water. We named that basin Lago di Como. Over a hundred miles around, the lakebed is shaped like an upside down "y". The southwest of the bed is called Como where the lake's main city, Como, is located. Alessandro Volta, the Italian inventor who revolutionized the use of electricity, was born here. The southeast branch of the lake is called Lecco, a serene and beautiful town. Calico, in the northern side, is the most stunning of all the places around Lago di Como, with incredible views in mist-covered mountains punctuated with villas. The city of Bellagio, serene and tranquil in its grandeur, is situated at the intersection of the "y."
