Bergamo is, as are many Italian towns, in two parts, Bassa and Alta, with the latter being, of course, the old part.The central square in Alta rivals San Marco in Venice for the wonderful sense of enclosure and "place". Bergamo is a proud and relatively upscale place. Milano is only an hour away by train from Bergamo.
