Bergamo is one of the most characteristic Lombard hill towns. The Upper Town, 274m (900 ft.) above sea level, is buttressed by and terraced on the original Venetian fortifications. About half a mile downhill is the Lower Town (usually identified by residents simply as "Bergamo"), with many 19th-century and early-20th-century buildings lining its wide streets. This modern metropolis and industrial center contains the bus and rail stations, most of the hotels, and the town's commercial and administrative center.
