Sanremo is one of the most important and prestigious touristic centres of the Mediterranean that has been attracting, ever since the 19th century, famous and noble figures. The oldest part of Sanremo is called Pigna. It is situated on the highest part of the town and it dates back to 1000, but it has been preserved intact until today. The ancient part is built as a structure of concentric rings, in order to defend properly the town against the attacks from the sea.
