Levanto was once the old feudal stamping ground of the Malaspina, and the Da Passano families before coming under control of the Republic of Genova. The closeness of the Cinque Terre is one, but the continuous onshore breezes keep the climate mild throughout the year. A natural deep bay surrounded by green hills has also created a marvellous setting with the town protected by the east 'del Mesco' promontory.
